I have just joined the Carrollania e-group which split off from this one. The group has no flames or nastiness, perhaps because it has become smaller now, and although this is a lovely site, there are advantages to the other one too - not least that you can just run down the threads without having to open up every one to read the discussions, and also, of course, because there are different interesting things discussed. (I was intrigued by a most entertaining April Fools picture of CLD and Alice.) I think both groups need to thrive, so can I suggest members here do check out the Yahoo Carrollania e-group? I

Jenny TBH if there really is need for a list-based group as well as this one then it makes a lot more sense to re-open the old Carroll list, which has 450 members and a massive archive rather than try and run some splinter group for various reasons of disaffection. I personally don't think it's necessary - but sure, if anyone wants to take on running LC at Yahoo, then ask me and they can take on the ownership.

I was entirely happy with the old group but this is also good, and so is Carrollania. There are now far fewer members in total (even if you take both groups together and pretend that some of the membership is not duplicated), than the old group had by itself. So I don't think there is any point in getting into boring discussions about disaffection, who is being sensible and who is not, etc. etc. It is better to concentrate on building up both groups in order to maintain a good body of people who are interested in Carroll, and get the critical mass back again.
I do not remember your offering the ownership of the old group to anyone at the time, otherwise I would have said it was a good idea for someone to carry on with it - but there again, I have been out of the loop due to family problems and in fact I still have very little time unfortunately to read either group at this point. So perhaps you did offer it and nobody wanted to take it up.
Anyway please can we just leave it that both are interesting? Because it is true.

Honey, I'm just saying if you think there should be a Yahoo group then take up the old Carroll one - it's still there and still has 450 members! plus it will save anyone having to move and host the archive. Anyone wants to have the thing they can.

I started the Carrolliana group because there IS a need for a non-forum based discussion group. I would be happy to take over the old list and its archive.

Thanks! If you've given it up, ought I not be made an owner?

My only problem with this site is it seems to not get a lot of activity. I really don't care at all for non-forum based discussion groups as I find them unwieldy and impossible to use in any sensical fashion, whereas a forum such as this one is easy to organize and information can be accessed quickly and without much fuss. I'm a member of the new Carrolliana group too, though, because there are some good folks there with interesting things to say. I just wish it wasn't a list.

The activity on the old Lewis Carroll list had dwindled to almost zero before we moved here, and the activity on Carrolliana is virtually nil a lot of the time too. It seems that Carroll fans don't chat or discuss by nature. Personally I don't think there's enough interest to serve any more than one forum (barely enough for that). But I may be wrong.

Thanks! If you've given it up, ought I not be made an owner? Well, with the greatest of respect, I don't really know you, and (as has been pointed out) there is a massive archive on that list dating back to 2001. While I'm sure you're not going to do anything insane and delete it or whatever, I'm sure you understand I prefer to be cautious to begin with, until we get to know one another a little better. So, I'll appoint you a mod for now. You'll be perfectly free to run the list exactly as you choose, but the option of deleting it will remain with me for the present. Is that to your liking or would you prefer someone else took over instead?

Yeah, I'd agree with you, but I guess not everyone can agree on the superior format.

My work is in international standardization; you can learn a bit more about me in the Wikipedia article about me. I have published the Irish translation of Alice in Wonderland earlier this year. As I say, I would be happy to be made owner or co-owner, but if you would like to wait, moderator status will have to do. Please set it up. (I was away for a time and this explains the delay in my visiting this forum to get back to you. I really don't prefer forum-based discussion, though I understand that many people do.) Please PM me and we can proceed by e-mail.

An Irish Alice... there's something interesting! I wouldn't mind having a copy of that on my shelf just for fun. I don't read or speak the language, but I'm of Irish descent and I love the way the language sounds. I'd have learned it were it not for lack of time and energy.

I recently recommended a book to a fellow Carrollian (The unknown Terrorist) that I described as 'very Carrollian. As it is a dystopian tragedy based on the way that post 9/ll society has made Orwell's vision seem almost benign, I got to wondering how others see the term Carrollian?
I would love to hear from group members there views on the following:
Who do people think is the most Carollian artist of the 20th century - and why?
Whose music do you see as Carrollian - and why?
What is the most Carrollian comedy you hae seen?
Which playwrite most reflects Carroll's approach to literature?
And anything else members may want to contribute on the same theme.
Have fun,
Regards
JT
