I believe they are now the MCR (middle, i.e. postgrad, common room).

Thank you so much Mike. I couldn't find anything about it on the internet. I hardly dare ask, but could you point out on the picture I will attempt to post here, where his rooms were located? I will visit Oxford and Christ Church next month...would be great if I knew which way to look. Sunset Attachments:

I'm afraid that with my usual technical acumen I wasn't able to mark your photo, but the rooms are in the north-west corner of the main quad - the bottom right as your photo is aligned. Best of luck getting past the porters. Mike

Porters in most Oxford colleges are a public-spirited, companionable and helpful breed. Christ Church porters are a breed apart. If you've ever read, or seen, Tom Sharpe's 'Porterhouse Blue' it will give you an idea. Mike

Mike, I haven't read the book you mention. Too bad they arn't as helpful as other porters, but I'll try to find out as much as I can of the to do's and don'ts. What gave you the impression they wern't helpful and public-spirited as you say? Is there a particular reason?

Jody, please don't take a (semi-)jokey post too seriously! I have no doubt at all that if you show up at Christ Church at one of the prescribed time for visitors you will have no trouble at all getting past the porters, they always play by the rules. (If you show up at the wrong time be prepared to be repelled by force of arms if necessary). My initial comment was a reference back to my time as an undergraduate (at Exeter, not ChCh, I'm glad to say), when ChCh porters in their bowler hats - which might as well have had yellow bands on - were a standing joke in the rest of the University. (ChCh students were too for that matter). My experiences as a researcher in the mid-90s suggested that the tradition was still in force. It's quite possible that they have mellowed in the intervening 14 years, I do hope so. Having said that - give me a ChCh porter over a ChCh librarian any day. Mike Mike, I haven't read the book you mention. Too bad they arn't as helpful as other porters, but I'll try to find out as much as I can of the to do's and don'ts. Oh I'm sorry Mike, It's just that when I plan a journey and/or visits I tend to be very fastidious. And so that's why I didn't catch the (semi) joke. I was in my serious mode you see... I like to know everything in advance to avoid losing my temper, it would be a great loss as mine's a good temper, realy Oh, the bowler hats are still worn by the porters at Ch. Ch Jody Ps Do you have any tips for a first time visitor to Oxford? Places I should see, or avoid?
